Why do you go to the fringe and do comedy festival shows?
Because I’m a glutton for punishment! Sometimes I mistake having a phenomenal career and an unbelievable lifestyle for proof that I’m talented and desire to be informed otherwise by poisoned creatures (read critics) who couldn’t raise a giggle in a room full of overtired shrooming hyenas. Truth is through every little struggle, whatever they happen be, doing what I’m lucky enough do for a living is a total unmitigated blast!
To save me from doing a lot of swearing at google, what is your history of Edinburgh shows?
First went in 95, missed a couple but not many since then. Been on my own mostly but also within a troupe The Dinks with Dan A’polski and Tony Law and was last up two summers back with a one man play I wrote the little seen and lesser celebrated “Mr. Eyetwister” rock the feck on!
Do you choose themed shows or just a straight hour of stand up?
I’ve never been a fan of hard fast rules and this time it’s just an hour of stand-up, themes are for anoraks and zealots.
How do you choose a theme?
How do you assemble a show?
Run it through incessantly until you feel like you’ll kill yourself if you hear it again, then practice acting like you’re hearing it for the first time. Sound horrific? It is, now smile until your teeth go dry.
Best piece of advice anyone gave you about the fringe?
Shoot yourself in the face.
What do you think the most common mistake acts make at the fringe?
Going in with a sense of hope.
Most effective way of selling a show?
Self immolation on the Royal mile.
What’s your favourite memory of the fringe?
Stroking out two punks at Late’n Live.
Least favourite memory of the fringe?
Unbelievably and thankfully I can’t think of one?!
